Sparky the hummingbird

Ann started this little appliqued hummingbird in a class with David Taylor.  I took the class too, and learned a lot, but my project is still unfinished.  Ann's turned out really well - she added the flowers to his pattern. I told her the hummer's name is Sparky.

She told me she wanted the fabric at the bottom to look like a rock wall, and the fabric on the right to look like a trellis.  That was fun to do.

I was concerned about finding something to do in all that blue sky area, I wanted to give the impression of movement. Luckily, Ann liked what I came up with!

My small group met at my house this week and we decided we would all work on a table runner with Kelly showing us how to make it.  She had made a bunch of them at Christmas and we had all admired them.  Here is everyone at work in my studio.  Kelly said it looked like a sweatshop.

  2. Ann's applique is beautiful and your quilting compliments it perfectly. What did the table runner look like?

    1. It's a reversable table runner, you add the batting as you construct it so it's all quilted when you are done. I'll post pictures after our next meeting.

  4. Omigosh, I love the swirly bits around the hummingbird. It really brings the bird-in-motion to life. Kudos also on the 'rock wall' and 'trellis' quilting. Amazing. And of course the quilt itself is absolutely gorgeous.

  6. I think the sky looks great, like the Kansas wind? I've seen several of these and think this is the best one. Your quilting of the sky, rocks and trellis and Ann's flowers are beautiful!

  9. This hummingbird and your quilting are amazing. I'm working on a personnal project, and I would love to use this hummy and his flowers, adapted to my quilt size. As I aslo love your quilting ideas for walls (rock wall and trellis), I ask your the permission to use them on this project.

A fan of your great job, Frederique

  10. Thank you Frederique! You are welcome to adapt my quilting designs for your own use but the pattern is made by David Taylor and I'm sure it is protected by copyright. He has a website where you could find the pattern if you wish to purchase it.

  11. I took the hummingbird class with David Taylor, too, two or three years ago. I just found it the other day ... all three feathers completed! Slow but steady, right? LOL! Thanks for posting.
